On Saturday afternoon, the Börzsöny Mountain Rescue Service was notified by the Pest County Police after a distress call was received through the 112 emergency number. A woman and her child had gone hiking from Katalinpuszta but were using Google Maps for navigation. They repeatedly tried to find their way back to Katalinpuszta without success. Nightfall caught up with them, and they eventually became completely lost. Fortunately, they still had mobile phone coverage and were able to call for help.
The mountain rescuers contacted the woman directly by phone and guided her step by step through the process of sharing her GPS location with the rescue team.
As soon as the location was received, two mountain rescuers departed from the rescue base in Szokolya. Just 35 minutes after the initial alert, they reached the stranded hikers.
Fortunately, neither the woman nor her child had suffered any injuries, apart from being frightened, so no medical treatment was required.
The rescuers transported them back to Katalinpuszta, where they were able to continue their journey home in their own car.
