At 2 p.m. on Sunday, the Börzsöny Mountain Rescue Service was contacted by the Hungarian National Ambulance Service and informed that a hiker had been injured in the Börzsöny Mountains. Initial information regarding the casualty's location was contradictory, so the Ambulance Service dispatched two ambulances: one approaching from Nagybörzsöny and the other from the direction of Kóspallag.
Meanwhile, the Mountain Rescue Service's duty operations coordinator alerted the mountain rescuers on standby at the Szokolya base and attempted to establish contact with the casualty and the other members of the group.
The Mountain Rescue Service uses specialised incident management software which, among other functions, allows a location request to be sent directly to a mobile phone via SMS. Using this system, the operations coordinator was able to establish the casualty's precise location on Nagy-Sas-hegy, along the Green Triangle hiking trail.
Just ten minutes after the initial alert, three mountain rescuers had already departed from the Service's Szokolya base in an off-road rescue vehicle. At the same time, the operations coordinator coordinated the response with the Hungarian National Ambulance Service. As there was no longer a need for two ambulances, it was agreed that the unit approaching from Kóspallag would proceed to Érsek-tisztás, where the mountain rescue team would hand over the casualty.
The mountain rescuers reached the casualty approximately 30 minutes after setting off. They were able to drive part of the way up the mountain in the off-road vehicle, but the final 180 metres could only be covered on foot.
The team's emergency medical technician examined and treated the casualty, who was suspected to have sustained a serious lower-leg injury. After the injured leg had been immobilised, the casualty was carried by stretcher to the off-road rescue vehicle.
The team then transported the casualty down to Érsek-tisztás, where the Hungarian National Ambulance Service crew had already arrived.
The casualty was handed over to the ambulance crew and transported to the hospital in Vác for further examination and treatment.
