Girl Injured in Fall at Remete Cave (2026.03.01.) - 20260301 remete 1

The emergency call was received on Sunday afternoon after the girl fell approximately 3–4 metres near Remete Cave, suffering head and leg injuries. The Nagymaros Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Vác Professional Fire Brigade, an ambulance from the Hungarian National Ambulance Service based in Szob, and an air ambulance were immediately dispatched. Due to the large number of emergency vehicles and the helicopter operation, the Police temporarily closed Main Road 12 near the Dömös ferry crossing.

The duty officer of the Börzsöny Mountain Rescue Service alerted the rescuers on standby while simultaneously speaking with the girl's father to gather details about the accident and confirm the exact location. It soon became clear that the girl had attempted to climb to one of the upper openings of Remete Cave before falling back down. Fortunately, based on the information available at the time, her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

As with many previous rescues in this area, the responding units assembled at the Dömös ferry crossing on Main Road 12. The Police and the Hungarian National Ambulance Service arrived first, followed by the Nagymaros Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Vác Professional Fire Brigade, and one of our mountain rescuers, who responded directly from his home in Szob. From there, all rescue personnel continued on foot to the cave.

At the scene, one of the firefighters from the Nagymaros Volunteer Fire Brigade began providing initial care for the injured girl. Shortly afterwards, the Börzsöny Mountain Rescue Service team arrived, together with a paramedic from the Hungarian National Ambulance Service, who is also one of our mountain rescuers. Meanwhile, the air ambulance relocated to a landing site on the outskirts of Nagymaros, allowing Main Road 12 to be reopened to traffic.

After the patient had been stabilised, the rescue teams worked together to transport her down the steep trail using the mountain rescue service's specialised rescue stretcher. From Main Road 12, she was transferred by ambulance to the waiting helicopter.

The Hungarian Air Ambulance Service then flew the girl to St. John's Hospital in Budapest for further treatment.
