Hiker with a leg injury in Nagymaros (2026.04.18.) - 20260418 1

At 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Hungarian emergency number (112) received a call from the injured hiker. She reported that she had slipped while descending from Szent Mihály Hill towards Nagymaros and had severely injured her ankle. Following the alert from the National Directorate General for Disaster Management and the Hungarian National Ambulance Service, rescue units from the Vác Professional Fire Brigade, the Nagymaros Volunteer Fire Brigade, and the Börzsöny Mountain Rescue Service were immediately dispatched.

Rescue operations around Szent Mihály Hill always present unique challenges. One of the most important decisions for the incident commander is selecting the fastest of the three possible access routes to reach the casualty and carry out the evacuation. In this case, the optimal approach was from the end of Panoráma Road in Nagymaros via the Yellow Trail, and all responding units were directed to this access point.

The mountain rescuers drove their rescue vehicle as far as the Rigó Hill junction, where five rescuers disembarked. Two medical rescuers immediately continued on foot to the casualty, while two others assembled the specialised rescue equipment before following them. One rescuer remained behind to guide the arriving emergency units to the correct location.

The Nagymaros Volunteer Fire Brigade transported the firefighters from the Vác Professional Fire Brigade to the meeting point, and the two fire service units then continued together on foot towards the injured hiker.

The first mountain rescue team reached the casualty at 2:10 p.m., just 40 minutes after the initial emergency call, and immediately began medical treatment. By the time the injury had been stabilised and the patient prepared for evacuation, paramedics from the Hungarian National Ambulance Service, together with firefighters from Nagymaros and Vác, had also arrived at the scene.

Working together, the rescue teams carried the patient for approximately 1.2 kilometres using the Börzsöny Mountain Rescue Service's specialised rescue stretcher. Just 26 minutes later, they reached the waiting ambulance at the end of Panoráma Road in Nagymaros.
